Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova has met with the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in our country Fergus Auld.
It was observed at the meeting that the relations between Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom, the two friendly and partnerly states, rest on mutual confidence and support and develop successfully in the political, economic, humanitarian and other fields. The importance of high-level visits and meetings for defining the co-operation agenda of our countries was emphasised, and the visits of President Ilham Aliyev to the United Kingdom, the visit of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer to our country for the COP29 participation and several other high-level visits paid by the opposite side were mentioned as well.
As was remarked during the conversation, the economic ties represent one of the principal components of our countries’ bilateral relations. The United Kingdom, one of the leading trade partners of Azerbaijan, is also a country which has made the largest investments in our economy. Speaker Sahiba Gafarova high-lit the importance of the co-operation links in the energy sector in this relation.
Having recalled fondly her visits to the United Kingdom as well as the numerous encounters with the high-ranking representatives of the United Kingdom now visiting in our country, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis broached the impact of the negotiations held during those visits and meetings upon the development of the inter-parliamentary relations. It was mentioned that the Milli Majlis Working Group for inter-parliamentary relations with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is one of the largest. Speaker Sahiba Gafarova underlined the importance of reciprocal visits and a close dialogue for the cause of continuing the expansion of the ties between the two legislative bodies.
Ambassador Fergus Auld expressed contentment with the close co-operation and partnership built up between our countries before broaching the successful advancement of the two countries’ co-operation and the presence of broad prospects in energy, alternative energy, education, green technologies and several other fields.
They also touched upon humanitarian co-operation issues and emphasised that, in particular, the high-level education co-operation between our countries serves to further the strengthening of the bonds between our peoples. The conversation also included an exchange of opinions about other matters of shared interest.
