Within the framework of the Thirteenth Session of the United Nations (UN) World Urban Forum (WUF13), the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources organized a side event titled “Early Warning and Climate-Resilient Cities.”
The event was dedicated to strengthening urban resilience against the impacts of climate change, particularly focusing on reducing the damage caused by extreme natural events to the environment, urban infrastructure, and residential areas, as well as highlighting the role of multi-hazard early warning systems in making science-based, life-saving decisions.
Umayra Taghiyeva -Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mukhtar Babayev - the Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues (via video message); Hijran Huseynova - Chairperson of the Family, Women and Children Affairs Committee of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan; Khayyam Mammadov - First Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency, Ilhama Gadimova - Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jabrail Khanlarov - Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Dimitris Avramopoulos – a member of the Nizami Ganjavi International Center, European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship from 2014 to 2019 delivered opening speech. Representatives of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Turkish State Meteorological Service, and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources participated in the panel discussions.
It should be noted that the “Early Warnings for All” (EW4ALL) initiative was launched by the UN Secretary-General. Within the support UNEP and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Azerbaijan plans to implement the project “Strengthening Climate Information and Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems for Increasing Resilience in Azerbaijan.”
